Despite efforts of a flight attendant to revive the pilot – an American Airlines captain passed away in the cockpit.
American Airlines Flight 550 was heading to Boston from Phoenix when the pilot fell ill at the controls. The co-pilot took over & requested an emergency landing.
A flight attendant who was a former registered nurse attempted to save the Captain’s life but was unsuccessful.
The flight landed in Syracuse, New York for emergency crews to remove the deceased from the airplane. For legal reasons, airlines cannot pronounce someone dead in mid-air.
A replacement crew was brought in and the flight continued onto Boston after about a 4 hour delay.
Passengers say the flight crew handled the situation ‘professionally’.
