OK, Maybe a several thousand dollar idea.
Time for another Illinois State Fair. August in Illinois means heat. Mix fair & heat and you have thousands of uncomfortable fair-goers. Here’s the idea. FROZEN TOWELS. Buy ’em bulk for pennies, Dampen them, freeze them on site, and sell them on the fairgrounds for $2. Can you think of anything that would give a hot fair attendee relief from the heat quicker than a frozen towel? Me neither. Place it around your neck, stuff it in your pants – whatever. You’ll have instant cooling relief, and when the towel loses it cold, you have a hand towel you can take home. About 10 years ago I was so convinced this was a moneymaker, I set out to run a trial of sorts. I got Dick Van Dyke to deliver and set up a freezer. I put up a tent. I filled the freezer with about 500 hand towels that I’d moistened. I decided that this first year, I’d give them away free – I just wanted to measure interest. That year, I’ll never forget – the only thing that could happen to kill a Frozen Towel stand – happened – and repeated every day I was there. The temperature barely reached 70. I hung my head in shame that year and haven’t really considered the idea since.
