Carrie Underwood released her latest album Cry Pretty last Friday, so I thought I’d give it a listen and tell what I think!
Tracks + Thoughts
#1 Cry Pretty: The title track is a little bit of a drag due to its slow melody and draining theme. I’m not a big fan.
#2 Ghost On the Stereo: The feel of this song is an overall sad one. There’s lots of reference to crying and feeling alone. I wasn’t a fan of this one.
#3 Low: This song was not a good choice to follow the previous, creating back-to-back sad songs. The feeling of being alone and the phrase “I’m so low” repeats so many times that you start to feel depressed.
#4 Backsliding: The first song on this album that I actually liked due to her great vocal range and relatable content.
#5 Southbound: I think she has a get chance of a chart topper with this upbeat song. It has a great summer feel and a catchy tone.
#6 That Song That We Used To Make Love To: With a title like that, I expected a lot more. This one rides the fence. It’s just so…so. The tempo, vocal range and theme are nothing to write home about.
#7 Drinking Alone: I really like this the smooth and savvy way the lyrics sway me into the idea that I shouldn’t be drinking alone.
#8 The Bullet: This is a very relatable song due to the fact that it touches many different scenarios. It is thought provoking and also sad at the same time. It delivers the awesomeness of Carries vocal ranges.
#9 Spinning Bottles: Another very slow tempo cheating song with a theme that gives up on everything. This song doesn’t have enough power to make it to #1.
#10 Love Wins: This song should have been the title track! It starts out slow and builds in typical Carries style. I love that anyone can find a positive even in despair. The chorus is relatable to everyone.
#11 Ending Up With You: I kept waiting for this grand hook, something that was going to wow me. Nope. Carrie just kept repeating the words “all I wanna do is end up with you” over and over.
#12 Kingdom: Great song about living our happily ever after. It gives hope with a powerful message and a Carrie mid-tempo tone.
#13 The Champion: All I have to say about this one is FOOTBALL!
